SYNOPSIS: Evelyn Hugo, a Hollywood legend ahead of her time, is getting older and has hand-picked a young and highly under qualified journalist, Monique, to write her biography. As she speaks of her life, Monique learns about the twists and turns, the selfish nature, and the myriad of reasons for Evelyn’s marriages and divorces, joys and losses, highs and lows. In the end, Monique realizes that she has much more in common with the star than she ever could have imagined.

MY THOUGHTS: When people rave about a book, I don’t always go running to read it. This book has been on my TBR for a while, and I knew it was finally time when the audiobook became available through my local library. This book was not at all what I was expecting, and not necessarily in a bad way. Some people say this is loosely based on the life of Elizabeth Taylor, so if you are into old Hollywood vibes, you may enjoy this one.

  • *I did not expect for this book to have so many sexual encounters, including some between two women. I am not one to read much “smut” or “spice” and was completely caught off guard. At times it seems as though these scenes were unnecessary and added in for extra shock value. The constant description of Evelyn’s “bombshell” body and how she used it to gain success and power with men and women was off putting for me. Don’t get me wrong, I understand that this is how some people feel they need to behave, but personally it wasn’t enjoyable to read about.
