Providing book reviews from a couple of bookaholics
SYNOPSIS: Avery Grambs is a fairly ordinary teenager, just trying to get through each day in high school and become successful enough to one day get out of her situation. One day she is visited by a stranger who tells her she is requested at the TEXAS (!!!) mansion of a multi-billionaire—that's a billionaire with a “B”!!! Along with his family of mysterious characters, Avery is informed that she is to receive basically all of Tobias Hawthorne’s wealth and possessions. There is only one condition: for one year she must live in the Hawthorne House with his family who believe they should have been the heirs to his fortune. Avery does not even know who this man is, let alone why he would leave her this insane amount of money. In order to uncover the truth, she must work with the people who may hate her the most!
MY THOUGHTS: This was a fun palate cleanser, and surprisingly a little dark! Typically I do not pick up YA books, but I was absolutely influenced by social media and some friends who are fans of this genre! There was mystery and adventure sprinkled with riddles and darkness. I think this would make for an excellent movie, mainly because I want to see the house with all its puzzles, hidden passageways, and the excessive amount of LIBRARIES! It was fast-paced and the short chapters definitely had me wanting more than just one more chapter at night. I’m pretty sure I read half the book in a night because of those 2 or 3-page chapters! The way I rated was based solely on the entertainment factor the book provided between very intense and heavy novels.
While this was a fun time for an adult, I must also let you know that there are mentions of a physically abusive relationship, a very manipulative girl, a kiss, death, and a lesbian relationship. Just a heads up in case you are hoping for your teenager to read it!
